Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke (D) quelled budding speculation that he is switching parties and will immediately challenge Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D). Yesterday, Sheriff Clarke announced that he is not becoming a US Senate candidate, which is a major disappointment to the state’s conservatives who were urging him to run. Earlier, Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wausau) also declined to initiate a statewide challenge against Ms. Baldwin. Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and state Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald top the list of potential Republican candidates. Venture capitalist and 2012 Senate candidate Eric Hovde is also openly considering entering the race.
