Old Dominion voters stream to the polls today, as this evening both Democrats and Republicans will choose their party nominee to battle to succeed term-limited Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D). Former Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie is expected to win a comfortable victory tonight, but the Democratic affair is more interesting. Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam and former US Rep. Tom Perriello (D-Charlottesville) appear to be entwined in a close contest for their party nomination. The race is similar to the Clinton-Sanders 2016 presidential race where the more extreme faction and the establishment Democrats battled to lead the party. The campaign has strayed far to the left, so it may be quite a task for the winner to tack back toward the center in a face-off with Gillespie.
