Certain Democratic leaders were attempting to recruit state Rep. Cesar Blanco (D-El Paso) into different 2018 congressional races, but he announced yesterday his decision to seek re-election to the state House of Representatives, instead. Mr. Blanco was considered a top challenger to two-term Rep. Will Hurd (R-San Antonio) in what currently is the state’s only true swing district. He also could have taken a shot at Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s (D-El Paso) open El Paso city district, which would have meant engaging in a Democratic primary battle. Now it’s back to the drawing boards for the party leadership in both districts to find suitable congressional candidates.
