Ohio:  Two More

5/9/2017

Yesterday, a pair of office holders, one from each party, who had been expected to join the growing Republican and Democratic gubernatorial candidate fields did so.  Secretary of State Jon Husted (R), always viewed as a major contender, announced that he will run for the open Governor’s position, joining Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, Attorney General and former US Senator Mike DeWine, and US Rep. Jim Renacci (R-Wadsworth) in the Republican primary field.

For the Democrats, Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley officially announced her candidacy.  She will battle former Rep. Betty Sutton (D-Copley), state Sen. Joe Schiavoni, and ex-state Rep. Connie Pillich for the Democratic nomination.  Former US Representative and presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich and Consumer Financial Protection Board director and former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray remain as potential Democratic candidates.  Gov. John Kasich (R) is ineligible to seek a third term.  Both primaries and the general election will be highly competitive.
