Ever since Cincinnati City Councilman and former US Senate candidate P.G. Sittenfeld declined to challenge Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati), the Democratic leadership had been courting Hamilton County Clerk of Courts Aftab Pureval to enter the race. Yesterday, Mr. Pureval announced that he will become a congressional candidate. Democratic leaders believe he is a strong prospect because he successfully upset a long-time incumbent during his original election campaign for Clerk in just this last election.
Rep. Chabot was first elected to the Cincinnati-anchored seat in 1994, but lost to challenger Steve Driehaus in 2008. He ran again in 2010, and was returned to Washington. President Trump carried the 1st District with a 51-45% margin, and Rep. Chabot has averaged a 60.0 re-election percentage post-2010.
