Polling has been scarce for this major special election, but we finally have some initial numbers. The Emerson College Polling Society conducted a statewide survey for the at-large district (4/20-21; 648 MT-AL likely voters) and find Republican businessman Greg Gianforte with a big lead over country rock singer Rob Quist (D). The numbers break 52-37% in Gianforte’s favor, so we can expect a major push coming from Quist and the national Democrats to try and reverse the momentum. Fundraising has been strong for both candidates, as each will easily soon exceed the $2 million mark. The Republicans’ negative attacks on Quist seem to be working. The ECPS found Quist’s favorability index upside down at 43:48% positive to negative. The special election is scheduled for May 25th.
