Just after controversy erupted when Republican special election congressional nominee Greg Gianforte became engaged in a physical altercation with Guardian-US reporter Ben Jacobs, resulting in the GOP nominee allegedly “body slamming” the correspondent and being charged with misdemeanor assault, voters visit the polls today to cast their ballots. Already, county election officials from throughout the state have received almost 260,000 ballots, meaning we will have an extremely high voter turnout. Because the at-large Montana seat has over 1 million residents, just under 700,000 individuals comprise the district’s voting pool, the largest of any CD in the country. While spending will not reach the GA-6 special election record totals that could exceed $40 million, the Montana campaign has set an internal congressional campaign spending record. More than $17 million will be expended when totaling the candidate committees and outside political party and ideological organizations.
