Though, on paper, Sen. Jon Tester (D) ranks as a vulnerable re-election incumbent, the opposition field has been slow to gel. The only announced Republican candidate is state Sen. Al Olszewski who is unlikely to mount a major challenge. Yesterday, businessman Troy Downing announced that he will enter the Senate contest. Mr. Downing, an Air Force veteran, operates his main business in California so he will be vulnerable to carpet bagging charges. This is especially true considering that current at-large special election GOP nominee Greg Gianforte is being attacked as an outsider because he has only lived in Montana for 25 years.
