Already running far behind for the state Republican convention endorsement, former Gov. Tim Pawlenty announced that he will not participate in the delegate event. Appearing in a position to clearly lose the official endorsement to Hennepin County Commissioner and 2014 gubernatorial nominee Jeff Johnson, Mr. Pawlenty will gain ballot access via petition signature. This guarantees a competitive Republican gubernatorial primary on August 14th, and means the party nomination is still up for grabs regardless of what the convention delegates decide in June. Gov. Mark Dayton (D) is retiring, thus yielding an open Minnesota gubernatorial race this year.
