State Treasurer Terry Hayes announced her campaign for Governor. Ms. Hayes will run as an Independent, which is significant in Maine. The state elects Independent Sen. Angus King and an Independent has twice thrown the election to Gov. Paul LePage (R), who both times won without reaching even 40% of the vote. Maine voters also approved an instant run-off law, but without a great many specifics outlining the mechanics of such a vote, many questions remain unanswered. Should the Hayes candidacy prevent anyone from obtaining a majority vote, this election could well be tangled in the courts for a lengthy time. Since Maine has no Lt. Governor, the state Senate President would assume the duties of office in case of a vacancy.
