Mayor Eric Garcetti (D) easily avoided a run-off election on Tuesday night, capturing 80% of the vote against a weak field of opponents. This race was interesting in that it provides Garcetti with a five and one-half year term instead of the normal four. Attempting to increase turnout for the Mayor’s race, the next election will be held concurrently with the national mid-term in 2022. Mayor Garcetti will not be eligible to run again but, assuming he serves the entire term, he will have been the city’s chief executive for nine and one-half years. He is a potential candidate for Governor, so we will see if he soon makes a move to enter the 2018 open statewide race.
