Retired Marine Corps fighter pilot Amy McGrath, who flew missions in both Afghanistan and Iraq, formed a congressional exploratory committee this week but still claims to be undecided about making the race against three-term Rep. Andy Barr (R-Lexington). This could be due to the presence of Lexington-Fayette Mayor Jim Gray, the Democratic nominee against Sen. Rand Paul (R) last November who looms in the background as a potential congressional candidate. State Sen. Reggie Thomas, state Rep. James Kay, and former state Rep. Leslie Combs are other potential Democratic candidates. Chances appear strong that Mr. Barr will become a major Democratic conversion target next year.
