Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad’s (R) Senate confirmation last night as US Ambassador to China will lead him to immediately resign his current position. America’s longest-serving Governor, over 22 non-consecutive years in office, will yield to Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds (R). Since it has been known for months that this transition would occur, Democrats have already been planning to run against Ms. Reynolds. Six individuals, including state legislators, local officials, and a former Democratic Party state chair, have already announced their candidacies. Ms. Reynolds is not likely to draw a strong Republican challenger, so she will be able to serve almost half the current term before facing the general electorate.
