Marketing consultant Marie Newman (D) filed a congressional exploratory committee this week, suggesting that she will challenge Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Western Springs; Chicago suburbs) in the 2018 Democratic primary. Mr. Lipinski is one of the more moderate Democrats in Congress, thus the Newman challenge will definitely come from the ideological left. Rep. Lipinski, first elected in 2004 to succeed his father, Rep. Bill Lipinski (D) who served in the House for 22 years, last fielded a Democratic primary challenge in 2008. He easily defeated his competitive opponent, Mark Pera, 54-25%. Rep. Lipinski will begin any primary race in the favorite’s position.
