State Sen. Michael Williams, an entrepreneur before entering elective politics, joined the crowded group of Republicans attempted to succeed term-limited Gov. Nathan Deal (R). Sen. Williams gained notoriety in the presidential race, becoming the first Georgia elected official to publicly support Donald Trump. He joins Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, Secretary of State Brian Kemp, and state Sen. Hunter Hill, who are already announced gubernatorial candidates. Former US Congressman and Senate candidate Jack Kingston (R-Savannah) is also sending signals that he will soon join this open seat campaign. State House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams (D) made her gubernatorial quest official with an announcement event over the weekend. State Sen. Stacey Evans is also in the Democratic race.
