Georgia:  New Polling Data

3/7/2017

The Trafalgar Group, which proved one of the few firms to accurately forecast the 2016 presidential result in the key Great Lakes States, released the results from their new Georgia special election survey (3/2-3; 450+ GA-6 likely special election voters), and no clear leader is yet emerging.  Democrat Jon Ossoff has less than a half-point lead over former Secretary of State Karen Handel (R), as businessman and local city councilman Bob Gray (R) is close behind with just under 14%.  Combined, the Republican candidates are at 45% while the two Democrats mentioned could only reach the 21% level.

Ossoff also just hit the television airwaves, but one of his three ads attacks President Trump.  The Trafalgar study found the President is holding a 51:41% job approval rating in this district, a clear improvement over his 1.5 percentage point victory here over Hillary Clinton in the November vote.   Therefore, his “attack Trump” strategy may not strike the chord within the electorate that Ossoff hopes.

Eighteen candidates on are the April 18th jungle primary ballot: 11 Republicans, 5 Democrats, and 2  Independents.  The top two finishers will then advance to a June 20th special general election, assuming no candidate tops the majority plateau in April.
