Surprisingly, state Senate President Kevin de Leon (D-Los Angeles) is taking direct action to enter the open Governor’s race. Considering that the expensive statewide race already features four major Democratic candidates: Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, state Treasurer John Chiang, ex-state Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin, and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, it appears that de Leon would begin the race as a very long shot candidate. His statewide name identification is low, and he starts millions of dollars behind several of the other major candidates in fundraising. California’s jungle primary will occur in June 2018, with the two top finishers, regardless of political party affiliation, advancing to the general election.
