The University of California at Berkeley’s Institute of Government Studies just released a new poll for the coming jungle primary for the state’s open 2018 gubernatorial campaign. The survey (5/4-29; 1,628 CA adults; 885 likely voters) finds Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) leading the contest with 22% of the vote, but the big upward mover from previous studies is former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D). He ascends to 17%, virtually doubling his previous support total. The poll brings bad news for Democratic State Treasurer John Chiang. He scores only 5% in this survey, falling behind even two unknown Republican candidates who will not be a factor in the actual campaign.
