Yesterday, veteran Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), at 84 years of age the body’s oldest member, announced she will run for a fifth full term next year. Though thought of as a retirement possibility largely because of her age, the Senator has been consistent in saying that she would run again if she believed she was still an effective voice.
Ms. Feinstein’s re-election prospects appear strong, though she may well be challenged from her party’s left faction. State Senate President Kevin de Leon (D-Los Angeles) is making noises about running. Under California’s jungle primary system, it is highly possible that the two Democrats could face each other in November as both could reasonably advance into the general election from the June qualifying primary. Even in this scenario, Sen. Feinstein would be rated as a heavy favorite to win re-election.
