There was little doubt that two Democrats would advance. Republicans account for only 9% of the registered voters, and their lone candidate, apartment house manager William Rodriguez Morrison who spent no money on his campaign, finished eighth. Assemblyman Gomez, who was the clear Democratic establishment candidate, is the favorite to capture the seat in June. Former Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Los Angeles) resigned from Congress to become California Attorney General.
This is the first of the five special congressional elections to record votes. The next will be in Kansas on April 11th. That contest will replace CIA Director Mike Pompeo (R-Wichita) in the southeastern Kansas congressional district.
