Attorney Emilio Huerta (D), who lost to three-term Rep. David Valadao (R-Hanford/Bakersfield) by a strong 57-43% margin when the vast majority of California Republicans were finding themselves in tighter than expected races, yesterday announced that he will run again next year. Mr. Huerta is the son of Dolores Huerta who co-founded the United Farm Workers union with Cesar Chavez, though the connection to his mother’s history didn’t help him much in the last election even while Hillary Clinton was carrying the 21st by a substantial 55-40% margin. This Central Valley California congressional district is one of the nation’s more Democratic seats that a Republican represents, so Mr. Valadao has to take every challenger seriously. The ease with which he dealt with Mr. Huerta, however, casts the Congressman as a major favorite for re-election at least at the very early stages of the current election cycle.
