Republican Congresswoman Shelly Moore Capito defeated Democrat Secretary of State Natalie Tennant in the race to succeed retiring Democrat Jay Rockefeller to represent West Virginia in the Senate.
Capito had strong support from the business community in this increasingly Republican state.
In Congress, Capito was the first woman elected to Congress from West Virginia and will be the first female Senator from the state.
In the House, Capito served on the Transportation and Financial Services Committees.
