The top Trump district in Minnesota (62%) is held by a Democrat, so naturally the Republicans will look to make this seat a significant 2018 target. Their hopes of seeing the district come open were dashed yesterday, however, as 14-term Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Detroit Lakes) announced he will seek re-election. The Congressman’s 2016 victory percentage was only 52% against a candidate who spent only $20,000, so we can be assured that the Republicans will be investing major dollars into this seat during the coming election cycle. Mr. Peterson is one of the more moderate members of the Democratic conference, particularly on business issues, but he is still not as conservative as the typical MN-7 voter. This race will draw national attention next year.
