The eastern Virginia 1st District that stretches from the Washington, DC suburbs all the way to the northern Tidewater region is safely Republican, and Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Montross) has had little trouble holding the seat since he won a 2007 special election after then-Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R) lost her battle to cancer. It appears he has drawn a significant Democratic opponent for 2018, however. Prince William County School Board chairman Ryan Sawyers (D) announced his candidacy on Friday. Though Rep. Wittman is rated a heavy favorite for re-election, this contest will be more competitive for him.
