Now that two-term incumbent Rep. Evan Jenkins (R-Huntington) is in the Senate race, jockeying has begun to fill what will be an open seat in the 2018 election. Two Republicans and a Democrat have announced candidacies. For the Republicans, state Delegate Rupie Phillips Jr. and former state Delegate and frequent candidate Rick Snuffer are in the race. Yesterday, freshman Democratic state Senator and former Iraq War veteran Richard Ojeda announced that he will run for the US House seat. Ojeda ousted a Democratic incumbent in the 2016 primary, and then went on to hold the seat in the general election. Though the eventual Republican nominee will be favored in 2018, the state can still elect Democrats to virtually any office, especially one from coal country who purports to have voted for President Trump as Sen. Ojeda claims.
