Attorney General Hector Balderas (D), previously expected to enter the open 2018 gubernatorial contest, announced yesterday that he will seek re-election next year. His decision is a major development for US Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-Albuquerque), who became a statewide candidate months ago and has steadily been accumulating resources for what will be a competitive run. Veteran state Sen. Joe Cervantes (D), who has the financial wherewithal to self-fund a statewide campaign, should he so choose, said weeks ago that he would also run for Governor but has so far not formally announced a campaign. Media executive Jeff Apodaca, son of former Gov. Jerry Apodaca (D), is officially in the race. The New Mexico race is a top Democratic conversion opportunity. Gov. Susana Martinez (R) is ineligible to seek a third term.
