Quinnipiac University went into the field with their regular Garden State poll (4/26-5/1; 1,209 NJ registered voters; 519 likely Democratic primary voters; 331 likely Republican primary voters) to test the 2017 gubernatorial contest and finds former US Ambassador Phil Murphy (D) holding large leads for both the Democratic nomination and general election. Mr. Murphy approaches 30% among primary voters, with his next closest rival at only 5%. For the general election, he leads Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno (R), 50-25%. The GOP Lt. Governor has an equally strong lead in the Republican primary. Comedian Joe Piscopo, who flirted with running as both a Republican and an Independent, instead this week endorsed Ms. Guadagno.
