A week after veteran Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen’s (R-Miami) surprise retirement announcement, the candidate field is beginning to take shape. Previously in the race was 2016 nominee Scott Fuhrman (D), a business owner who scored 45% in November. State Sen. Jose Javier Rodriguez and Miami Beach City Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez are newly announced Democratic candidates. One substantial Republican has come forward, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Bruno Barreiro. More from both parties are expected to soon declare candidacies. Former Miami Mayor and current Miami-Dade County Commissioner Xavier Suarez, an Independent, is also considering entering the budding congressional campaign. Because the seat was drawn more Democratic in the state Supreme Court’s mid-decade redistricting effort, this newly open seat is a prime Democratic conversion opportunity.
