Democrats are heavily emphasizing finding a strong candidate to seriously challenge veteran Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Miami) next year. The South Florida district is now the Republican congressional seat where Hillary Clinton scored her largest margin yet failed to carry through a Democratic nominee to a House victory. Clinton’s margin over President Trump was a whopping 59-39% margin, but Rep. Ros-Lehtinen rebounded to score a 55-45% win. Businessman Scott Furhman, the 2016 Democratic nominee, is returning for a re-match. Late last week, Miami Beach City Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez announced that she, too, will seek the Democratic nomination. We can expect others to join the growing Democratic field as the election cycle progresses.
