Yesterday, veteran Rep. Robert Aderholt (R) announced that he would not enter the 2017 special US Senate election. The eleven-term House member may well have been appointed Sen. Luther Strange’s (R) strongest GOP opponent, so this development has to be taken as good news for the new incumbent’s camp. Though House members would not have to risk their seats to run in this election, so far none have entered the race. Rumors still persist that Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) remains a potential candidate. The announced Republican candidates include former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, state Rep. Ed Henry, former state Rep. Perry Hooper Jr., and ex-Alabama Christian Coalition president Randy Brinson. In addition to Rep. Brooks, state Senate President Del Marsh is also a potential Senate candidate.
