Joni Enrst (R) defeated Congressman Bruce Braley (D) in the race to fill the open Senate seat in Iowa. Ernst makes the move from the State Senate to the U.S. Senate, no small jump.
This race to succeed retiring Sen. Tom Harkin (D) was one of the most competitive races of the cycle. President Obama won the state in 2012 by 6 points.
Ernst rose to from obscurity to popularity in a crowded primary field with creative advertising, a disciplined campaign and ended up with an overwhelming win in the GOP primary by consolidating tea party and business support.
In the general election, she faced Rep. Bruce Braley (D).
Ernst is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard and has served in the state Senate since 2011.
